Patient care the likely victim of mental health trust job losses

Mental health services in the region have been at crisis point for some time – which makes news that 90 posts are to be axed deeply concerning.

The job cuts are the result of the Norfolk and Suffolk Foundation Trust’s plan to cut its deficit from £8.9m in 2015-16 to £6.1m in 2016-17.

While the trust says it hopes most posts can be cut through “non-essential” vacancies being left unfilled, a reduction of this magnitude will do nothing to change perceptions that patients are being let down.

Unison has raised concerns over a “dramatic impact on services”, with the trust admitting that demand continues to rise while funding declines.

In February last year, the trust became the first to be placed in special measures after the Care Quality Commission found the organisation was not a safe service.

Health bosses accept that there are long-term challenges – but further reductions in personnel will only exacerbate an already significant problem.

Gotelee solicitors has long been aware of an increase in cases involving mental health care negligence – a rise that correlates with government cuts to funding and the merger of the Suffolk and Norfolk trusts.

And it seems the same mistakes are being made time and time again. All too often, lessons go unheeded. Which is why anyone affected by failings in the system should seek legal advice with a view to making a claim.

We are proud of our record of helping those who have been let down by the system.

Legal action can result in compensation to ease associated financial pressures, it can help you find the answers behind what went wrong and it can shine a light on a particular failing to help ensure the same mistakes are not repeated.
